10 Short Stories and Four Fifths

Fifths is the name of a piece by Iain Cameron for solo synthesizer built around the interval of a fifth. The piece has been used by Robin Frederick, Gilbert Isbin, Mark Graham and Iain Cameron as the basis for further development in different ways. Both Iain and Gilbert have used it as a background for improvisation. Robin and Mark - with greater experience of what a recording studio can do - have transformed the original more dramatically. Mark's interpretation is quite violent whereas Robin's is quite eerie.

             Gilbert Isbin

Gilbert Isbin describes the Short Stories project as follows:

"My approach to composing is always very intuitively, although there are mostly some ideas going round in my head before I start with recording or writing some sketches down for further exploration.

The ten short stories were developed in the same way.

The original idea was to create spheres based on abstract, pure soundtextures.

Later on I thought it would be great to also incorporate  jazzoriented voicings and repeating melodical patterns or cycles.  The latter idea was a result of my analysing African guitar styles . Most of African music is composed of repeated phrases, fitting into one another in complex polyrhythmic and polyharmonic structures. "

The music comprises Gilbert's original guitar parts - sometimes multi-tracked with embelishments on flue, D-Horn, synthesizer and electric guitar from Iain Cameron.

Lullabies

Music for the Highveld is assembling a CD of Lullabyes - different interpretations by a wide range of artist's who support AIDS/HIV care work in South Africa.

Gilbert Isbin's specially written Lullabye was premiered on Belgian national radio in February 2003. Click here to listen to a sample and click here to listen to Paul Wheeler's Lullabye.

Paul Wheeler's Lullabye (produced by Iain Cameron) has a completely different feel and is unlikely

to put the child directly to sleep - maybe bouncing around to the tune will tire him or her out.

A number of other artists have joined the project or expressed serious interest in it. Watch this space for developments.
